Hoyt Family
 Oklahoma & Michigan

Stephen Hoyt was born about 1770 in Addison Co., Vermont.  He is the earlest Hoyt ancestor that we can document.  He moved to Michigan in 1828 and died November 1832.  The above scene depicts the first court held in Kalamazoo in October of 1832.  In the rear , seated at the bench, are Titus Bronson, Judge Harrison and Judge Stephen Hoyt.
Hiram C. Hoyt was the son of Stephen & Mary (Carter) Hoyt.  Hiram was born on 8 March 1819 in Logan Co., Ohio.  Hiram married Sylvia Watkins on 17 February 1847 in Kalamazoo Co, Michigan.  Hiram & Sylvia left Michigan and moved to Kansas and then settled in Oklahoma.  Sylvia Watkins was born on 14 October 1824 in Naples, New York.
This is a photocopy of William Hoyt's homestead certificate, granted on 3 June 1895, for 160 acres in Kingfisher Co., Oklahoma Territory.  Many people believe that the homestead certificates have original Presidential signatures.  This is not true.  Congress passed a law in 1832 relieving the President of this job.  They hired a special clerk to sign the President's name.  Andrew Jackson was the last President to sign a homestead certificate.
